First Aid for Snakebites

First-aid techniques that should be taken:

-Move away from the snake.
-Call 911 immediately to get prompt medical help.
-Keep the bitten area lower than the heart.
-Remove constricting clothing and jewelry.
-Wash the bite with soap and water.

Some medical professionals recommend other measures (if absolutely necessary):

-If a victim is unable to reach medical care within a half hour, consider wrapping a bandage three inches above the bite, without cutting off blood flow to the area. This should be only be done by someone trained and licensed in first aid. Otherwise, the procedure should be walked through with a medical practitioner’s help.

-Utilize a suction instrument from a commercial snakebite kit. This method is controversial, so it should be verified by a medical practitioner.

Avoiding Snakebites

-Stay away from all snakes
-Keep away from tall brush and deep crevices
-Wear boots taller than the ankle
-Make noise while walking
-Don’t stick hands or feet in areas that cannot be seen

Extra Precautions

-Always have a partner with you when hiking or jogging in a remote area
-Carry a charged cell phone that has reception in the area you are in

What not to do for Snakebites

-Do not use ice on the bite area
-Do not use tourniquets.
-Do not make an incision in the wound.
